Artist biography 2023

Pat Richards-Dodds began her art studies at Santa Monica High School, graduating in 1955. At age 16 she was awarded a scholarship for life drawing to Chouinard Art School. While at Santa Monica High School, Pat won the Los Angeles All City Art Competition for ink drawing techniques. Her studies continued at the University of Washington and throughout her life at Ventura College and through private instruction.

Richards-Dodds professional art career began in 1978 with several one person exhibits in the City of Ventura, including Buenaventura Art Association. In 1985 she became a member of the invitational professional arts organization, Studio 83, exhibiting with such notable artists as Susan Petty, Hiroko Yoshimoto, and Mary Michel. Her work has been shown at the Los Angeles Art Association, Studio Channel Islands Art Center, The Museum of Ventura County, the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, Community Memorial Hospital, Buenaventura Art Association, The Crowne Plaza Hotel, as well as many other galleries and exhibits and in private collections. Her work was recently featured in the Viewpoints exhibit at Studio Channel Islands Art Center.

In 2014 Pat was a featured artist as one of the Top10 Icons of Ventura County Artists at the Ventura Music Festival. In 2015 she was one of seven Southern California artists spotlighted in the New West Symphony’s Planets presentations at the Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center, Barnum Hall in Santa Monica, and the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.

Pat is an active member of the Southern California cultural community. In 1998 she was one of small group of art leaders who founded Studio Channel Islands Art Center. Richard-Dodds served as the founding chairperson, as well as Director of Development. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors. Patricia also served as a member of the New West Symphony Board from 2015—2018

Richards-Dodds current work reflects her interest in expressionism, including the effect of light on water and nature as well as abstract images that often project a 3D illusion.
