Exhibition Reception May 5, 4pm to 6pm
The Fluidity of Gender is more than an exhibition, it is a traveling event comprising thirteen sculptures, seven limited edition prints and four film works. New York based conceptual artist and social activist Linda Stein has developed the program through an intense partnership of artists and academics. The resulting interactive exhibition and education program is a groundbreaking example of the power of the arts to transform lives.
The Fluidity of Gender explores the continuum between the binaries of masculinity and femininity, while inspiring the compassion, empathy and bravery it takes to become an upstander rather than a bystander.
The exhibition asks people to re-invent and visualize bravery for themselves, to look at the armor they wear, the safety they seek in their everyday lives. Stein says, “With my androgynous forms, I invite the viewer to seek out diversity in unpredictable ways, to ‘try on’ new personal avatars and self-definitions, knowing that every new experience changes the brain’s structure and inspires each of us to a more authentic self.”
The program has been developed to be interactive and requires community partners to animate and experiment with the works. Studio Channel Islands will work with local universities and community organizations to make living works out of the sculptures and to generate a bespoke collaborative program.
