Artist Member Nahid Claudia Jaffee will have two paintings featured at the Rubicon’s upcoming production of The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith
A dramatization of the triumphant and turbulent life of the legendary “Empress of the Blues,” whose life was as large and as outrageous as her talent. Written by Angelo Parra, the play transported us to Memphis in 1937, one evening after a “Whites-only” theater turns Bessie and her band away. Laughter, pathos and music all come together to deliver an electric, entertaining and surprisingly touching evening in which Bessie sings signature songs such as “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” “St. Louis Blues,” “Baby Doll” and “T’ain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do.” This production stars Miche Braden of the original Off-Broadway cast.
the Show runs February 22nd-March 12th. Opening Night is Saturday February 25th at 7:00 pm
Nahid Claudia Jaffee’s creative roots stem from live theater where she garnered numerous awards for directing. Nahid was associated with the lionhearted West Coast Ensemble, serving the company as Managing Director, Business Manager, Producer and Resident Director from 1988 to 2005. Most notable directing credits include, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Grapes of Wrath (LA Weekly Award Best Ensemble), Hunting Humans, Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love ( LA Weekly Award -Direction) and Biloxi Blues (Dramalogue Award -Direction).
Theater is where she learned the art of telling stories. She began working with exotic wood in 2011 and ceramics in 2013. What led her to drawing and painting was the need to sketch her ideas for construction. She was faced with the truth that although she had been creative her entire life drawing was never one of her skills. Realizing she needed to learn how to draw, she immersed herself in books and videos. As a self-taught artist she is emboldened by the endless inspiration for the mastery of the technique of art.
Nahid resides in Ventura County California and is a proud new member of Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo California.
