Inspired by a deep love for nature and the environment, Deborah Paulsen creates surreal paintings with sea and landscape themes in Ventura, California. The methods used with the encaustic paint media create luminescent and sensual colors as it is applied and manipulated in a molten state. Fantastical shapes and textures are revealed through the various processes.
Layers of the encaustic medium are fused with a torch so that the colors mix and marble to create fantastical effects when the layers are excavated with pottery tools. Elements of the land, such as rocky protrusions, are carved in as compositional elements. Additional media layers include shellac and pigment stick, adding cellular textures and shimmering effects with silver and gold. A feeling of the places Paulsen explores is produced through atmospheric effects and manipulation of the media.
Paulsen loves making encaustic paintings as she lives in the moment with her full attention on the act of creation. Working with encaustic paint is an alchemical and magical process full of surprises.
Deborah Paulsen holds a Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Eastern Washington University. She has created and exhibited work for over thirty years.
