Progressive Relocation
Spring is in the air – and so is CHANGE!! SCIART is leaving
the CSUCI campus, saying goodbye to familiar places and faces, and
many fond memories. We have said goodbye to Michele and wished her
well in her new endeavors. We have welcomed Karin to her new position
as Executive Director. Some of the artists have made an early move
to the school campus in Old Town Camarillo, in anticipation of the
rest of us, possibly joined by some new faces, moving to the school
in July. The school site is directly across the street from the
SCIART Gallery at 2221 Ventura Blvd. We are in the D wing at the
back of the school with access off of Elm St.
The new SCIART Gallery is busy every day with people coming in to
see the current show, and browsing through the boutique section,
buying some of the unique gifts for sale there. The next show, the
third in our new location, opens on March 5th, featuring Marjorie
Moskowitz.
Our membership is growing, we are anticipating welcoming new Artists-in-Residence,
and we are even developing an up-dated logo for SCIART.
We have a new team of Docents who regularly keep the Gallery staffed
and welcome our visitors. They are doing a superb job. In fact,
since the beginning of the year they have logged 235 hours of volunteer
time! Pretty impressive.
All of this change has created new energy, and new enthusiasm (as
well as a lot of tension and weariness!) It is an exciting time
to work with the SCIART Board, and all of our friends and supporters.
Everyone is looking forward to finding more ways to support the
concept of developing a strong Cultural Arts Center in Old Town
Camarillo, with SCIART being a pivotal part of it. What an opportunity
for students, and for community members, and for Old Town, to be
able to experience the arts first hand – right here at home.
As your President, let me express my deepest thanks to ALL of you
who are working with us through these changes, looking forward to
creating a new future for SCIART.
Maggie Kildee

Studio Channel
Islands Art Center (SCIART) was created by a visionary group of local
artists and educators in Ventura County, concurrent with the development
of California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI), in Camarillo,
CA, for the purpose of promoting art education.
SCIART
curates exhibits in what represents the largest gallery exhibition space
in Ventura County. The three major Camarillo art galleries in this space
feature the works of regional and national artists. SCIART also provides
working studio space for more than 25 resident artists, creating an art
enclave unlike any other in the county.
Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIART) is the fortunate recipient
of the Edwin Hugh Barron estate. For
more information, please see the Eddy Barron
Endowment page.
