Roxie Ray, Three Strawberry Women

Progress on the garden September 2024

Dedicated to the memory of Roxie Ray, founding artist, philanthropist and champion of our creative community.

We intend to transform the under used and under loved sand box into a vibrant artist’s garden, filled with sculpture, native plants and opportunities to create. Our vision is to make a place for quiet contemplation and joyful gathering, a place to be filled with music and movement or left in serene stillness.

The garden will include a labyrinth which marks the boundary between the busyness of the street and the quiet genius of the artist studios. There will be benches to rest upon and seating areas to gather as well as trees to provide shade. The artist garden will be venue for the presentation of visual and performing arts as well as an open space for the public to enjoy as a part of their visit to Studio Channel Islands.

Adjacent to the artist’s garden will be a sensory space and outdoor classroom. These two spaces will be enclosed with a fence to provide a secure location for education and community groups.  The sensory space will have raised planters, kinetic sculptures, herbs and fragrant flowers as well as percussive instruments and art making spaces. Sensory gardens are stimulating environments for people with learning and physical disabilities as well as relaxing places for the general public to visit. The outdoor classroom will be suitable for groups of up to 35 students to take part in creative classes and will be flexible to allow for talks and small performances.

How can you support the project?

We need volunteers to help to make the garden a reality, we need gifts to buy the materials to make the garden complete and we need our community to spend time with us enjoying the fruits of our labor.
