Gold in the Scars

Ceramics and Acrylic Paint
21 1/2 x 23 inches

This torso was an assignment for my Advanced Ceramics course at CSU Channel Islands. Instead of creating an elegant Roman or Greek torso, I wanted to create a piece that would capture the attention of anyone who passes by it. “Gold in the Scars” is my imaginary tale of a woman who battles both inner angst and inner protection. Reacting to whatever inner demon or external threats she is facing, her stress literally cracks her, forcing her to open a single eye while reaching for her jaw to pull her down.Reaching to her “breaking point” as the cracks become more prominent on her body and clothes, she looks above in horror as a single gold tear forms. When when gold tear appears, a hot, gold divinity emergences in the cracks. This gold divinity is a symbol of resilience and an acknowledgement that she is protected, burning brighter than any peril that comes her way.
