BRIAN HOTCHKIN is a baritone praised for his “strong and effortless voice” and his “unerring, witty sense of theater.” His recent engagements including role debuts as Leporello (Don Giovanni) and Zuniga (Carmen) with the Mediterranean Opera Festival in Sicily, and as Filippo Maria Visconti in Bellini’s Beatrice di Tenda with the London Bel Canto Festival.

Summary
Twice-nominated Grammy winners Opium Moon create sensuous, enchanting soundscapes that evoke ancient worlds while remaining thoroughly contemporary. Elegant yet deeply emotional, their distinctive sound draws upon the diverse backgrounds of its members: Iranian santoor master Hamid Saeidi, innovative Israeli bassist Itai Disraeli, sought-after American percussionist M.B. Gordy, and virtuosic Canadian-American violinist Lili Haydn.
With original compositions that meld sacred/classical traditions of East and West with trance-inducing grooves, the result is at times both stately and rapturous, a sultry and passionate instrumental music that seems to emanate from a deep wellspring. NPR’s Bob Boilen called it “both a deep, thoughtful breath and an upbeat celebration.”

Summary
Join us for our next Film in the Gallery!
This month, we will be screening Victor Sjöström’s The Phantom Carriage (Körkarlen). A sometimes-overlooked standout from the silent era, The Phantom Carriage was voted by FLM—Sweden’s leading film magazine—as the greatest Swedish film of all time, earning the honor above the major of films of Ingmar Bergman and other outstanding Swedish directors. This horror-adjacent film follows David Holm, as he is taken by the ghostly driver of the eponymous carriage and forced to contend with the ways he has selfishly lived his life.
We are beyond excited to present this Swedish masterpiece with the live piano accompaniment of Michael D. Mortilla!
VIP tickets include priority seating and a free drink and snack from our bar.
Michael D. Mortilla has worked as a full-time, freelance journeyman composer for over half a century. His many commissions include feature films by Frank Capra for Sony/Columbia Pictures, countless scores for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, as well as original scores for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Library of Congress, Olympic Games, Martha Graham Dance Company, and many others. Michael scored the World’s First Internet broadcast of a film in association with the American Film Institute and was resident composer on the faculty at UC Santa Barbara for 14 years. He has lectured at CALARTS and has a teaching license for the City of New York Public Schools. Michael is also the entertainment curator for the Catalina Island Museum for Art & History. He is largely self-taught.

The Legendary Life of Charles Winans
“From psychedelic light shows to spiral tower paintings, Charles Winans’ art reflects resilience against scandal and suspicion. Charles Winans served in the U.S. Air Force 433 Troop Carrier Wing as an airborne radar technician until his discharge in 1961, when he became a biker and hot-rodder, designed the logo for Los Bandidos 1% M.C., and gradually became deeply embedded in the sixties’ counterculture.” [ Read article ]
