Recycled Sea Otter

Sculpture: Mixed media, Marine Debris, and Thrifted Fabrics
9 x 18 inches

I made this sea otter as part of my Marine Debris Project for sculpture class at CSU Channel Islands. All of the marine debris shown in this piece was once washed up in the beaches of Santa Rosa Island, and relocated to my class. According to the National Park Service, sea otters were once top predators in the Channel Islands National Park’s kelp forest, and as a result of heavy hunting and ocean pollution, and they have yet to return to the Channel Islands. This piece is a commentary humans have the power to contribute to destroying a habit or to save one. My “Recycled Sea Otter” was made from the help of ocean pollution, yet in theory it should have never been made at all.
