Magicas Escaleritas Magicas
As a Chilango artist based in Oxnard, CA, my work reflects the perspective of an outsider looking in and the instability of growing up in a quasi-nomadic manner. Having moved throughout my life over 20 times within my native Mexico City and Oxnard, I’ve never found a permanent home anywhere.
I tend to bring my work to life using textures, patterns and colors to contrast the dullness of minimalistic and fabricated contemporary existence.
My work is motivated by my necessity to truly feel alive, and it is intended to create a connection between audience and artist. I want to convey my humanity, the traumas, griefs, and vulnerabilities, while also welcoming my audience into snippets of my childhood, experiences, background, and Culture. The concepts behind my work are intended to give my audience an insight into the emotions that come with displacement and struggles with finding an identity.
A recurring theme of my art reflects the areas I have lived in, and I draw from the aesthetic of unkempt and dilapidated boroughs composing Mexico City’s urban landscape and the low-income working-class neighborhoods of Oxnard, reflecting wider societal and income inequalities and socio-economic hardships while embracing its resilient nature.
I am also inspired by childhood memories and draw from forms, patterns, and colors typical to the Central Valley of Mexico and the State of Oaxaca where cherished moments with family took place and continue to bring joy and humility.
Without compromise, my work touches on themes of living in constant instability, personal views on politics, feelings of uncertainty, alienation, homesickness, and the label of illegal immigrant.
I create work with the purpose of making people question the status quo, themselves, and traditions. I want my work to re-spark a long-lost sense of curiosity, and to fill my audience with a sense of awe.
