The first time I stopped along the side of the road to look at tire fragments I was surprised to find objects that were more organic looking than man-made. Rubber was once obtained from a plant and later a synthetic substitute was created from petroleum. It’s last synthesis is happening in a new medium as photography and then even further through a digital alteration.
The explosion of the tire created rips and tears through a network of steel belted radials and engineer-designed treads, the perfect artistic blend of organic and manufactured. This all felt very symbolic of what I was personally going through as I made my way through a chronic Lyme condition. I have also collected various wood elements that have naturally been a part of natures evolution as well as wood that was altered by humans.
In the midst of exploring these elements, I had taken a Zen Calligraphy class where I was introduced to the concept of painting from the “empty mind”. I noticed that in concept, the tires had also gone through a process that paralleled the “empty mind” and the bark of the tree also referenced the “Empty mind” concept. This process for both materials were transformations.
The underlying intention throughout all my work is about documenting the process of evolution.
