Teaching Artist Application

Job requirements: 

  • Professional working artist. A Fine Arts education and degree preferred but not required. 
  • Teaching experience and/or other experience working with children  
  • Experience designing Visual Arts courses and/or writing lesson plans 
  • Adaptable to a wide range of educational settings, K – 12 
  • Good communication and social skills 
  • Punctual and reliable 
  • Excellent time management 
  • Works well collaboratively as well as independently 
  • Available part-time between the hours of 9.00 am and 6 pm, Monday through Friday.  Specific days and times may be requested.  
  • Must attend periodic meetings and training sessions on Saturdays 
  • Must complete Livescan background check 
  • Mandated Reporter training required for all after-school and camp teaching positions.  Preferred for all teaching artists. 

Job description: 

  • Teach art to K-12 students on-site at SCIART and/or at school sites within Ventura County 
  • Design and develop course outlines and lesson plans. 
  • Plan, set up and clean-up for each lesson. 
  • Teach different class sizes from four to 30 students depending on the program. 
  • Teach a variety of mediums, techniques, and concepts 
  • 45 min – 1.5 hours contact time per lesson. 
  • Hours will be assigned according to your experience and schedule flexibility 

Compensation: 

Teaching on-site at SCIART Art After School, Spring and Summer Camp, School Visits, Family Art activities and workshops, Teachers in Residence program: 

  • $50 per teaching (contact) hour. This rate covers planning and pre-lesson set-up and clean-up. 

Meetings and Training:

  • $20 per hour 

Teaching at a school site – Artists-in Schools Programs, After-School Art Enhancement Programs: 

  • $50 per teaching (contact) hour. This rate covers some planning and any pre-lesson set-up and clean-up. 
  • + $30 per hour for lesson/course planning.  Limited to 30 minutes per lesson e.g., An eight-lesson course would include no more than 4 hours of compensated preparation time. 
  • + 70 cents per mile for travel outside of Camarillo City Limits.  Miles are calculated from SCIART to the school site. 

Annual bonus – ‘Master’ Teaching Artists who have worked more than 150 contact hours in one calendar year are eligible to be recommended for a discretionary bonus.
