My recent mixed media work has focused on experimental processes and the serendipitous interaction of materials. I set a variety of media together and witness their behavior as they are exposed to the laws of physics. Their chance interactions guide my reaction. I pour, brush sand and rub to recreate the effects of time on matter; layering and building or eroding and wearing away.
Life depends on opposition; positive and negative charges within atoms repel each other, creating space and the potential for structure. Without the space created by opposition we would collapse. Opposing forces sustain and define each other and are therefore interdependent. This interdependence presents the opportunity for communication. These images are a collection of opposites; black and white, oil and water, design and chance, object and idea. These works reflect on the beauty to be found in contrast and the essential communication between opposing forces.
My images have no subject, but refer to certain material states of being; quiet, sensuous, tactile, percipient, contemplative. They aim to capture the mystery, spaciousness and rich imperfect beauty of the natural world and reflect that all matter is interconnected and subject to the dispassionate pressure of time.
