I create art because I love to tell a story – in choosing certain elements for a piece, I seek to cause an impression, a visceral reaction, or make a statement about a difficult narrative. Collage became my primary medium because of its ability to incorporate any medium or material into this storytelling. Bringing together elements that are seemingly so disparate at first but using that contradiction to have one piece jar against another and flow into an other, I believe embodies the complexity of the different elements coming together in a multi-faceted story. Though I’ve been incorporating other elements in my work, my primary material is found magazine images. Whether it is based in photojournalism or in selling a lifestyle, I don’t believe there’s any better expression of the stories of societal culture than can be seen through magazine articles, ads and pictures.

Although my primary interest is in the telling of a story, I also have a strong interest in promoting collage art as one of the best ways to do so in present culture. We live in a time of non-stop stimulation, information, and connection that despite its increasing diversity is also becoming increasingly divided and antagonistic. It is as much incredibly exciting and overwhelming, as it is thrillingly global and deeply individual. Collage is an art medium that takes advantage of this glut of information by deliberately intertwining it together in order to tell stories of increasingly complicated, complex relationships, whether they are on a broader, global scale, or of a single individual struggling with their own personal world.
